Construction of a separate sewage system in the Emiel Vloorstraat in Antwerp by ViabuildA
Patron : Aquafin
Start of the works : June 2014
Costs : € 3.068.000
Project description
Thanks to the works, Aquafin will ensure that the wastewater of the residents of the Emile Vloorstraat is connected to the sewage network. Patron of the works Aquafin was founded in 1990 by Belgium’s Flemish Region to help develop, manage and finance the sewage purification infrastructure in the region.
By constructing two separate collectors, one for rain water and one for waste water, the residents’ waste water can be separated from the rain water. The waste water is channelled to the nearby purification plant. The rain water is assembled in its own separate collector, part of the Hollebeek has been channelled underground and flows into an open stream. Thanks to the works, water quality in the Hollebeek will be significantly improved: rain water will be channelled straight into the stream and the waste water will be purified before being released into the stream.
The construction of a separate sewer also significantly increases the possible flow rate, so that flooding in heavy rain is considerably limited.
The construction of a separate system also included a spillway. The very high flow rates going through the collector that was to be renewed and the fact that the collector could not be disconnected during the works, increased the complexity of the works. Pumping such flow rates to a different place means the risk of flooding is considerable when electric supply is interrupted. Because of all this, Viabuild proposed an three-phase alternative way of carrying out the works on the spillway, to make sure that the gravity water drainage remained possible in each phase. This way, the risk of flooding during the works was kept to a minimum.
After the sewage works were completed, the road infrastructure was also redesigned.
