Cyclists from Lier and the surrounding area will soon be able to get on the road more safely! We are particularly proud to be able to participate in the bicycle highway that is being built between Antwerp and Lier. We are not only constructing a +1,400m long cycle path for this beautiful project, but we are also working on a number of special civils constructions. A bicycle tunnel under the ring of Lier (R16), and further along the route a steel bicycle bridge enabling cyclists a safe crossing over the railway tracks.

In order to limit the nuisance for road users of the ring around Lier as much as possible, the concrete bicycle tunnel – 45 meters long, 6 meters wide and 6 meters high – was built on site, at a temporary location right next to the ring and right in front of its final location.

For the actual operation to move the tunnel to its final location, the ring around Lier was closed from Thursday evening August 20 to Friday morning August 28. In barely 1 week, a trench was dug (4,300m³ excavation), the 1,250T tunnel was moved to its final location, the trench was replenished and compacted, the raft plates and foundations were installed and paved. Thanks to smooth cooperation between our various execution departments, from calculation service to engineering department, asphalt and concrete plants and topography.
