The renovation of the tunnels in the centre of Brussels is under way. The works are spread over several years. After 35 years of intensive use, the Hallepoort tunnel is in urgent need of renovation. Viabuild’s Asfaltwerken department was commissioned to install a new waterproofing system. The waterproofing was built under the road of the Hallepoort tunnel to protect the underlying underground tunnel. Asphalting was installed on top of the waterproofing.

This layer needed to be protected with mastic asphalt so the work could be carried out mechanically. Thanks to the expertise and maximum dedication of all Viabuild employees, the work was completed on time and to a high standard.

Fact: During installation, mastic asphalt has a temperature of 220°C. To dissipate the heat and vapours, the tunnel ventilation had to work at maximum capacity…
